FAI Junior Cup Round 4
Newmarket Celtic 3
Bridge United 0
The home side and Clare champions proved the more clinical in this well contested 4th round played in cold conditions on Sunday morning.
Despite the inclement weather of the last week the home pitch was in brilliant condition. The opening half offered very few chances although Eoin Hayes always looked a threat.
Kieran Quinlan came closest to opening the scoring when his 30 yard free kick just cleared the crossbar. On the cusp of halftime an Eoin Hayes corner whipped right under the crossbar with Brennan unable to keep out.
Bridge had an appeal for a penalty turned down on 46 minutes when it looked like Shier impeded Quinlan when about to shoot. A big call and possible game changing moment passed and proved crucial as the hosts doubled their lead 2 minutes later.
A quick throw in from O'Brien found Monaghan in the Bridge box and his fierce shot ended up in the net despite Brennan best efforts.
Monaghan got his second on 85 minutes when Bridge failed to clear their lines and the former Mervue U19 made no mistake from 12 yards.
In summary Newmarket deserved their win but the scoreline will slightly flatter. Bridge will need to be more clinical when opportunities arise but have the personnel to still achieve something this season whether that be domestically or in Munster.
