Maloney Hardware Premier Division
Bridge United 3-1 Sporting Ennistymon
A game played in conditions that wouldn't be out of place inside the Artic Circle. A swirling biting wind wrecked havoc on the game as far as a spectacle was concerned.
It was Bridge who shot out of the blocks, Leon Kelly particularly bright in the opening exchanges.
A couple of half chances fell the way of the home side but nothing special to trouble the Sporting keeper who was alive to any danger posed to his goal.
The blustery conditions made direct play a lottery, but credit to both teams who tried to play positively despite the appalling weather.
It would be Sporting who'd open the scoring when a through ball set them free and the resulting 1v1 with Bridge custodian Paul Touhy was dispatched with aplomb by McConigley to make it 1 nil on 20mins.
Sporting enjoyed a purple patch for the next 10mins and were unlucky not to double their lead when Monahan hit the bar with a left footed volley.
This seemed to jolt Bridge into life and they duly wrestled back the momentum with a deserved equaliser when the aforementioned Kelly squared to the inform Brian Corry who tucked away calmly to level proceedings.
The second half was just 5mins old when a ball over the top was crashed to the net by Liam Buckley with a superb strike. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the visitors and Bridge went on to ramp up the pressure in search of a third.
It was that man again, Liam Buckley who finished off a classic counter attack. Sporting placed a ball for a corner and within 10seconds the ball was in the net at the far end. Beautiful fluid football to go the length of the pitch.
Bridge managed the remaining 15mins professionally and would be happy with their defence who limited Sporting to little or nothing in the second period.
This result sees Bridge leapfrog Sporting in the table in the process. Another fine win and duly deserved, a satisfactory evening's work.Next up is the visit of Mountshannon Celtic in the league.
