Hugh Kelly Premier Division Cup Final - Bridge United A 2 Avenue United A 0
Goals: Chris Lake 23, Brian O'Connor 90
Bridge left if very late to finally seal their first ever Hugh Kelly Cup win on Wednesday evening at the County Grounds.
Avenue started the game much the better with Bridge United slow to settle into the game. Clare youths player Aidan Kennedy who was a constant threat down the right hand side for Avenue started very brightly with experienced full back Noel Collins having to be at his very best to counteract the lively winger. At the other end the battle between Chris Lake and Michael Janaid was proving just as intriguing with both players looking on top of their games for the final.
Bridge United took the lead on 23 minutes almost against the run of play when Chris Lake was put through down the left hand side and released an explosive effort to the top of the net giving James Tierney in the Avenue goal absolutely no chance.
Jon Okoro came close to adding a second on 33 mintues when he held of Colm Treacy in the box but his effort went just wide of the post.
The second period was a very cagey affair with defences very much on top. On 70 minutes Pa McMahon was very harshly dismissed in what could have proved to be a game changer but with time almost up Brian O’Connor pressured David Smyth into a mistake following a Jonathan Downes through ball to calmly slot past Tierney for the second goal securing the win.
